Beautification Day - April 22
Daves Avenue School will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday April 22nd with Daves Beautification Day, when the school community comes together to beautify the campus. The primary focus will be to construct the Daves Sensory Garden, with colorful, textural, and harmonious features and native plants for all the sense to be a place of calm and refuge for students during the day. It will even include an outdoor classroom with 24 stools made from stumps from a recently fallen Heritage Oak tree! There will be additional projects as well. The participation will be driven by a SignUp sheet where families can opt to help out for a couple hours and/or donate items needed, such as mulch and soil (and we are linking the donations to the LG Art Docents Mulch Madness fundraiser for cheaper pricing, direct-to-school delivery, and double benefit to the Art Docents). Come join the fun, and watch for more information in the coming weeks! Brought to you by the Daves Avenue Grades of Green Team.
Introducing: Crayola ColorCycle
Crayola ColorCycle an amazing program devised to turn used markers into energy! Last school year Daves Avenue recycled 2,000 colored markers! Lets beat that record this year!!
Bring your used colored markers OF ANY BRAND, need not be Crayola, that are ready to be discarded. There is a box in the Daves Avenue workroom (where the copiers are), and you can simply dump them in there. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
This is a free and easy way for the kids to get involved with recycling for the greater good - no monetary return to our school, just the “right” thing to do rather than send them to the landfill!

Free Money AND Help the Environment!
We’re excited to kick off a new fundraising program that turns your energy savings into donations, in partnership with a company called OhmConnect. This program is free to use, reduces our community's use of electricity from the worst polluting power plants, and can drive up to $10,000 in donations this year to Daves Avenue Home & School Club, to directly benefit our students.
So far we have 7 families on the Daves Avenue team, and in a few short months those 7 families already generated $500 in donations to Daves! Join them and lets see how much we can generate!
It is simple for you: sign up, turn off or down your electricity at home a couple times per week when they send you “Ohm Hour” notices (this happens when there is a peak use of electricity and they ask members to reduce usage at those times), and receive points that translate into $ for Daves Avenue!
Sign up here with your PG&E online user account number (if the link isn’t “clickable” please type it into your browser exactly as you see it here): ohm.co/davesav1
Please signup quickly because we get $40 for each new member that signs up with our code. Let’s not let that go to waste! In addition, most families can earn $100 per year from Ohm that go directly to Daves as a “free to me” program (similar to the idea of eScrip or Amazon Smile).

Trash Free Tuesdays!
We are putting environmental awareness into practice by taking part in Trash Free Tuesdays (aka TFT) every week at Daves Avenue! Please help make our school and community greener by helping your child bring a trash free snack and lunch every Tuesday for the rest of the school year. Please help us reduce the amount of waste that we send to the landfill and teach some important lessons about conservation to our kids in the process!
How do I know if my child's lunch is trash free?
**All food must come in reusable containers (no ziploc bags or commercial packaging)
**Use cloth napkins that they can bring home (not paper napkins or paper towels)
**Send reusable cutlery rather than plastic spoons and forks
We are aiming for all reusable or edible items....no trash and no recyclable items on Tuesdays!
To make it even easier, thanks to the Daves Home & School Club, we will be sending home a cloth napkin for your child to use for the rest of the year on Trash Free Tuesdays (or every day!). We will also be sending home an information sheet with instructions on how to pack a trash free lunch. Please look for these 2 items to come home with your child in the next few weeks.
As an added bonus, your child will have a chance to win fun prizes on TFTs! There will be random raffles held on some Tuesdays at lunch throughout the year. All kids with completely trash free lunches brought from home will receive a raffle ticket and a chance to win.
Let's do all we can to help our environment. TFT lunches are a great place to start! Please help your child by packing a trash free lunch together every Tuesday.
