FAQs
2023 Authors' Day Book Sale
When do students receive their books?
On Authors' Day books will be given to students after they hear their author.
Can books be brought from home to personalize?
Ask Mrs. G. This is typically difficult because of the complexity of the day.
Can I ask the author to sign anything else, just for fun?
No. It’s good manners at author events *not* asking authors to sign other papers, clothing, etc.
Can I order books from either author? Or both?
Yes, and yes.
What payment methods are available?
Credit card via the online order forms.
Check via paper forms turned in to the office.
Check or credit card on the days of the after-school book sales.
Checks should be payable to Daves Avenue Home & School Club
Is it possible to order books in person?
Yes. Volunteers will be taking book orders after school many days between now and February 28th.
Paper forms can also be turned in to the office. Make sure they do not suffer sinking to the bottom of backpacks!
At the library at quiet times or after school (if any stock remains) until the Wednesday after Authors' Day.
Can I go see both authors?
At school, there is only enough time for students to enjoy the author who is visiting their grade level. If the authors schedule visits at Hicklebee's, you can see them there.
Is there tax on books purchased via the order form?
Not for you (we take care of it). The prices we charge are rounded to the nearest dollar. So a discount equal to the tax (about 10%) is built into the price.
Why is the pricing arranged that way?
To simplify orders, same day cash sales, and figuring for you. Book sales strengthen the event (by making more reading likely), but they are not the purpose of Authors' Day, though they help fund it. Thank you Home & School Club for your funding of this event.
What if I miss all the deadlines? Are any books for sale on Authors' Day?
We may have limited stock of some titles on Authors' Day. Ask at the library, but NOT during a presentation. Complete a paper form with payment and deliver to the office. Last minute sales are difficult; stock is not guaranteed. Please shop early if you can. We will ask the authors to leave signed books or bookplates if time allows. Remaining books will be returned to Hicklebee's on the Wednesday after Authors' Day.
What are bookplates?
Large labels that are signed by the authors, and later put inside one of their books. Sometimes all of our Authors' Day books are signed via bookplates, because it allows the authors more flexibility. Signing many books takes a long time; we will ask the authors what they prefer.
What if I use the paper form and it gets buried in a backpack?
If it surfaces after the authors have gone, we will do our best! If an order is late, bookplates may help, since the authors are gone. We will ask them to leave a few signed bookplates, and hopefully schedule will allow.
How is Authors' Day funded?
The Home and School Club generously has an annual budget item for Authors' Day. Please thank them!
I want more of this author!! How?
Go to the event at the store. Those are often lightly attended during the week. They can be a much more intimate opportunity to meet the author than an entire grade level, because getting to the store after school is challenging.
What if I miss Authors' Day?
Your librarian will take notes at the presentations of both authors. Reality is, however, that they are fun to listen to!! We aim for a Thursday, and distant from vacation weeks, to make it likely everyone will be here! If you have read the books, in a sense you can never miss completely. :)
What if I have more questions for the author?
Listen to every question… other people may want to know exactly what you’re asking. If your class makes a list of questions before (or after), and sends to the library, we will help get answers!
Will everyone get a book for Authors' Day in years to come?
That is our aim, and additional helpers are welcome!
Are all of the authors' books available in the library?
Yes!! And the bookmobile brought extra copies of every book to keep up with demand! Read them all!!
Should students read books by both authors?
YES!!! See Mrs. G for suggestions to fit your family.
What’s the best strategy for reading them all??
Come to the library! Thanks to the bookmobile, we have many copies of every book!
But the library closes early!
Book fair is coming up, Friday, February 28th through Friday, March 6th. The library is open until 6 pm every one of those days. On Wednesday, March 4th the library will be open until 9pm, and possibly on Friday, February 28th as well.
