Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between the Home & School Club and the Los Gatos Education Foundation?
A: The H&SC and the Los Gatos Education Foundation (LGEF) are two distinct, but equally important pieces of our school’s overall funding puzzle. The H&SC supports programs for the students ONLY at Daves Avenue Elementary. The LGEF supports programs at all five district schools (Lexington, Blossom Hill, Daves, Van Meter, and Fisher).
Q: What is One Community LG?
A: Prior to the 2020-2021 school year, schools in the LGUSD raised funds through donations to both their respective Home & School Clubs and to the LGEF. Formerly, parents at Daves Avenue would contribute to the H&SC through donations to Dollars for Daves, and to the LGEF through a separate donation. This year, to simplify the Fall fundraising campaign into one donation, the LGUSD is introducing One Community LG. Your contributions still benefit the Daves Avenue H&SC and the LGEF the same as they did in the past. Read more about One Community LG and make a contribution HERE.
Q: Why do parents need to supplement funds for educational programs and staff?
A: The financial support we receive from the Daves Avenue community allows us to provide essential programs and services for our children. These programs are not covered by state school funding or local property taxes. The Daves Avenue Home & School Club plans to spend $350 per student this school year so support from our community is critical in bridging the gap between what our school has and what it needs.
Q: Why do funds go to both the H&SC and the LGEF?
A: Both organizations benefit your child’s education, but in different ways. The money the school district receives from the state has dwindled in recent years and is now a fraction of our total budget. The money we receive from property taxes is simply not enough to provide a quality education for our children. A quality public education is no longer free.
Funds allocated to the Daves Avenue H&SC support functions very specific and unique to our school. This includes classroom programs that are an integral part of our children’s enriching experience at Daves Avenue. Without your donation, many of the extra programs that directly benefit your child would not be possible.
The Los Gatos Education Foundation is a parent-run, non-profit organization that funds teachers and materials for programs in Science, Music, Art, Resources and Technology (SMART), at Daves Avenue, Blossom Hill, Van Meter and Lexington elementary schools and RJ Fisher Middle School. This past school year, the Foundation provided grants for: our five district Music teachers, our elementary Art teacher, Art supplies, The Art Docents of Los Gatos, hands-on-Science/STEM materials and student support services (Project Cornerstone, CASSY and elementary school counselor).
Without the money raised by both entities, there will be a huge gap in the school’s operating budget. Parents can benefit both the H&SC and LGEF through ONE donation to One Community LG.
Q: Can I influence what the money is being spent on?
A: YES! Attend meetings, talk to board members, and if you find a program you think would benefit the children at Daves Avenue, present it to the Board at an H&SC meeting.
Q: What specifically does my donation to One Community LG pay for?
A: Please visit the One Community LG website for full details on how your donation benefits the Daves Avenue H&SC and the LGEF.
Q: How does the H&SC determine the ask amount per student?
A: We ask for what we anticipate on spending for each child at Daves Avenue yearly. We take into consideration our staff and programs we currently have in place, and think about the potential of new opportunities for our students.
Q: What is the online student directory?
A: The online student directory, utilizing software offered by AtoZ Connect, includes class lists and contact information for students and parents – in addition to other useful information. You will receive access to the directory if you gave permission to provide your family's information to the directory on your child(ren)'s district registration form.
Q: Who do I contact on the board if I have questions?
A: Any one of them! Not sure who? Please see the Board Member page or simply send an email to info@davesavehsc.org
